Reclaim Your Closet

Clothes should flow in and out of our lives and change as we do. Have you stood in front of you bulging closet claiming to have nothing to wear?! How we dress says so much about us.  Sure clothes don’t make the person, but they can boost confidence and a leave lasting first impression.

Try some of these tips to simplify your clothing and spruce up your look.

Let go of anything that doesn’t fit.  Likely, by the time it fits again, it won’t be in style anyway. Donate or consign your unwanted clothes. Organize remaining clothes by colour; what colour do you wear most?  Try a new hue!

Place your hangers in backwards. After you wear something, hang it back up the correct direction. Factor in the seasons; then take a look at what is still hanging backwards. Let it go.

What looks best on you?  Hire an image consultant or go shopping with a friend who has a good eye for fashion who will tell you the truth.

Only keep what you feel good in.  If you don’t like the shape, texture, pattern or anything else about it, let it go.  You should feel good in everything you put on, right down to your underwear!

Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society….  Mark Twain

Four Categories of Clutter

Four categories of clutter are:

1) Things that are not used or loved

2) Things that are untidy or disorganized

3) More things than space

4) Anything unfinished

Walk through your home with these categories in mind and be honest with yourself. What is it time to let go of?

Organizing the Organizer

The Food Processor

Even with a passion for order, and a clear understanding about letting go of the no longer loved, used or functional; from time to time I am challenged too. I have nothing but gratitude for the experience as it gives insight and reminders of what it is like for our clients to let go.

Recently for me it was the food processor. Here is what letting go of it looked like.

Questions and answers to myself:

How long have you owned it? It was a wedding gift 20+ years.

When is the last time you used it? A year or possibly longer ago.

What are your favourite things to make with it? Cheesecake and that amazing cheese torte.

What is the likelihood you will ever make these again? Slim to none.

So what if you wanted cheesecake? I would go somewhere fabulous to get one like Max’s or Fratelli.

Okay, decision made, it goes.

At this point I did not hesitate; I added it to some client donations already in the car, jumped in and drove away.

I blessed the food processor for the many great years we had together. Celebrated its future with someone who would love, appreciate and use it.

Then I focused on my future, enjoying a New York or chocolate cheesecake someone else had made.
